1. Sleepwalking - Chiiild
There's not much to say about Chiiild other than they will be ruling the industry at the end of this year. After a breakout 2020 which saw them release Synthetic Soul a 7 song classic project that introduced them to the world. The Montreal based act comprised of vocalist Yonatan Ayal and instrumentalist Pierre-Luc Rioux has all the potential in the world. We are highly anticipating their full length release hopefully by the end of the year.
2. Hate - Kota the Friend, Statik Selektah
Kota is becoming a force in his own right in the hip hop community. Everyone who follows rap closely has taken notice to the new voice from Brooklyn. Starting with a breakout 2019 which saw him release Foto that landed on everyone's year end best hip hop albums list and following it up with a big 2020 with Everything that saw him link with Joey Bada$$, Bas, Tobi Lou and Braxton Cook. He links with the legendary Statik Selektah for his second project of 2021 and the two do their thing on every song but especially this track.
3. Issue (feat. Vince Staples) - PRICE
One half of Audio Push, PRICE has branched out and found a successful lane as a solo act. The Southern California rapper put out one of our favorite projects of the first quarter of 2021 with F.O.E.S. This album has received rave reviews and has a number of standout tracks including this one with Long Beach native Vince Staples. Over a methodical beat, the two bring their signature storytelling with their hard lyrics. Give this record a spin and you won't regret it.
4. Penguins - Young Dolph & Key Glock
Any time Dolph and Glock get on a record together we know it's going to be fire. After 2019's Dum and Dummer we all knew they were going to be the next dynamic duo in the long line of prolific rapper pairs. Dum and Dummer 2 is nothing new but what we all expect from the Memphis rappers - crisp beat selection, charismatic flows and chemistry that's off the charts. This intro track sees both of them trade verses that set up the album perfectly.
5. Homecoming (feat. DUCKWRTH) - Caleborate
Caleborate is another up and coming artist that bends genres and has all the tools to make a huge name for himself. The Sacramento raised vocalist followed up his 2019 project Hear Me Out with another highly anticipated album with Light Hit My Skin and it does not disappoint. This track sees him collaborate with DUCKWRTH another Newstalgia favorite.
6. Mortal - Karl Benjamin
Karl Benjamin is a budding star in the UK that has mastered his craft. His sound is so refined it shows how hard he works on his music. His first project on streaming services is D.R.I.S.T. The 4 song EP is a good introduction to his unique sound and this song Mortal is a catchy tune that is going to have everyone grooving.
7. Los Angeles - Connect Zero
Connect Zero is a visionary in every sense of the word. His music, his fashion, his charisma all fit together seamlessly and come together to create an artist that isn't afraid of taking chances. The Portland raised rapper catches you from the minute you hear his music. His style can't be defined by just one word and you can tell he puts in the time to perfect his craft. We are excited to see what Connect Zero has in store for us this year.
8. Ting Tun Up, Pt. II - Skiifall & Knucks
Drake done know say Skiifall next up. The Canadian rapper is definitely on the right track with this hit single. The piano in the instrumental is so perfect and compliments both Skiifall and Knucks so well. The Montreal rapper Skiifall and UK rapper Knucks link up beautifully and produce this follow up to the original Ting Tun Up released earlier this year. The future is bright for Skiifall and we can't wait to hear what he's got for us the rest of the year.
9. Rooftops (feat. Curren$y) - Wiz Khalifa
Can you believe it's the 10 year anniversary of Wiz Khalifa's debut album Rolling Papers? The rerelease of the album this past week took all Wiz fans back to the feeling they had back in 2011. The nostalgic feeling is strong with that era of hip hop and Wiz was a pioneer in his own right. This is one of our favorite tracks off of the project and we hope you take some time to revisit the classic album.
10. attention - Chynna
Last year's news of Chynna's untimely death had the hip hop community shaken. She had shown so much potential and everything she had released had been hard. Her spirit lives on in the art she made and the lives she touched. We honor her by never letting her music die. Chynna was the truth.
11. Silent Ride - WESTSIDE BOOGIE
Boogie really the one. His lyricism, flows and beat selection are all top tier and everyone should take notice if you haven't already. Mixing west and east coast sounds the Compton rapper has one of the most unique voices in the game right now. His Shady Records debut Everythings for Sale is as good of an album as there is. Hopefully his recent run of Twitter freestyles means the MC is cooking up something serious this year.
12. Woo$Ah - Childish Major
Another superstar in the making is Childish Major. First making a name for himself as a producer but now a renowned solo act, he has shown everyone that he is here to stay. The Atlanta based artist released Woo$Ah in 2017 and made everyone take notice in his smooth style. Now a Grammy nominated artist, the ceiling is non existent for Childish Major.
13. I Believe (feat. BJ the Chicago Kid) - Joy Denalane
Joy Denalane is a legend in her own right. The German born singer has many layers to her music so it's unfair to characterize her style as anything but unique. Her 2020 album Let Yourself Be Loved released by Motown Records is a gem from front to back. She enlists BJ the Chicago Kid to assist with this record and it is something you have to listen to.
14. Piggy Bank - 50 Cent
Too many times 50 cent is not given the respect he deserves. His peak was as strong as anyone who has picked up a mic and his legend only grows from there. After his 2003 debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin' there was almost too much hype around the Queens rapper. His second studio album The Massacre lived up to all of that hype and more. This track is a perfect example of how prolific 50 was in his prime.
15. Rome (Wasn't Built in a Day) - Sam Cooke
Sam Cooke was something else. His voice is one of the most recognizable and his influence on the music industry is lauded today. Taken far too soon, the Mississippi raised singer gave us classics in his time. His 1964 album Ain't That Good News is one of the most important soul records that has ever been made. This is a standout song on that album that makes everyone feel good.
